At a Glance
Northern Computer is a Canadian MSP in Kelowna, British Columbia, running security awareness training for 80+ clients and over 6,000 end users across public sector, education, healthcare, government and professional services. Business Systems Manager Brenden Salter went through four vendors before finding one he could set up and walk away from.
Key outcomes
- Client setup cut from 90 minutes to 10
- 36 hours a year saved on reporting alone — three hours a month of manual work reduced to none
- Zero monthly intervention, with campaigns, reports and training running themselves
- Reduced cyber insurance premiums for clients who can now prove training is active
The Challenge
Three vendors in. Still doing everything by hand.
“I was burning out. I was getting frustrated. I was grumpy all the time. I was not enjoying my job.”
Every report was a screenshot sent by email. Every campaign had to be configured by hand, every month, for every single client. There was nothing to automate and no way to be hands off.
Brenden refused to pass a broken tool to his team. “If I'm feeling that way, my team is going to feel that way when it gets passed on to them.” He tried two more vendors. Neither solved the core problem: he still couldn't set it and walk away.
And the content itself did not fit his market.
“My tech team got a Venmo phishing test and we don't have Venmo in Canada. It's not a thing. We have e-transfer and it's free. They said ‘this isn't real’ and that's not going to work for any of my Canadian clients.”
The Solution
Four vendors evaluated. One actually worked.
After trying Phin Security, Hook Security and Huntress, Brenden was running out of options. Each had the same problem in a different wrapper: manual setup, limited automation, and content that didn't fit Canadian clients. Then Pax8 introduced him to usecure.
“I had a meeting with Tor and he showed me the platform and how it all worked. So I said, let's do a trial. And it kind of blossomed from there.”
“I could select the templates I wanted and push forward. Canadian content was a huge benefit for us. I don't need a Fourth of July phishing email and I don't need a Great Britain one because they don't relate.”
The Results
Set it. Forget it. Finally passed it to the team.
“We went from setting up a client where it would take an hour and a half to 10 minutes. And we went from having to spend three hours a month making sure all the campaigns and reports were set up to not having to do that at all. In fact, some clients have said, dial it down a bit. It's a little too much — which means it's working.”
- Dramatic time savings. Client setup dropped from 90 minutes to 10. Monthly reporting went from three hours to fully automated — 36 hours a year back.
- Cyber insurance impact. Clients can now prove training is active, leading to reduced premiums.
- Risk scores dropping. End users are trained on their weakest areas first, with risk scores visibly falling month over month.
- Handed to the team. One page of documentation, no training manual needed.
“My account managers are in there more than I am. They're always like, hey, these reports look great.”
How They Did It
“They just had to see the relief on my face.”
“I didn't have to create this big executive brief or justify it through ROI. They just had to see the look and relief on my face and they had to see that the results were instant.”
- True automation. Set up a client in 10 minutes, never touch it again. Campaigns, reports and training run themselves.
- Canadian content. Phishing templates that make sense for Canadian end users, not American or British defaults.
- Team-ready from day one. Simple enough to hand over with a single page of documentation.
Brenden's advice to MSPs
“Why wait? It's not going to break your bank and it's going to give you your time back.”
